I dunno, I think with the original canon there's always going to have to be a wife/girlfriend for Watson, and it's also a good way of getting more female characters into the show (although I don't really like the fact that new female character = love interest!). I mean, Mary Morstan was at the centre of the first-ever Holmes case so it's hard to see them ignoring the love interest angle. I just hope she gets to carry on being awesome and gets a bit more of a role.
