The Enormous La Cage Aux Folles Picspam, take two! This time, our focus will be twofold: firstly the Cagelles, the beautiful and multi-talented dancers at the La Cage Aux Folles nightclub, and secondly on John Barrowman’s Zaza. John gets a section all to himself because he’s damn pretty and there are lots of photos of him being damn pretty. Bless you, fandom.
(Also, a note: the Picspam Part One has been heavily updated since yesterday. Go, take a look, give me the hook, or the ovation... I’ll stop now. *shuffles off*)
NEEDLESS TO STATE, THIS PICSPAM IS ALSO VERY, VERY BIG. CLICK AT YOUR OWN RISK.

The reason why this play is called ‘The Birdcage’ in French.

Yes, these guys do all have better legs than you. It’s okay, they have better legs than everyone.

Ahoy there! I wish I had a bigger/better quality version of this shot.

First night party, I think. Roger Allam and Philip Quast, don’t think we haven’t noticed you two getting cosy again...

In the dressing room! This one's with John Barrowman's Cagelles. One of the things I love about this show is how the stage is simultaneously the real stage, the fictional stage, and various other rooms around the club. Note Hannah from Hamburg on the right with her whip (and her boyfriend), Francis.

Dressing room again, with my preferred Francis in the middle.

Sparkly! I love these girls.

With Roger Allam’s Albin.

And this time with Douglas Hodge.

A determined attempt to turn La Cage into the Moulin Rouge...

But La Cage is much better. The sheer GLEE everyone in this show has is enough to make me smile.
Three shots of John Barrowman’s Cagelles, as John makes a determined attempt to grab the picspamly limelight early. Not now, John! You’ll get your chance later!

Some individual shots from backstage...

Photobucket keeps deleting this one, despite the fact that the boys here are not actually naked and it’s not like you can see anything you shouldn’t even if they are. If it does it again, let me know and I’ll re-upload to LiveJournal.

Me with Jason Pennycooke, who played thebutler maid, Jacob, in the Quast/Allam production! Jacob desperately wants to be a Cagelle, and he’s certainly fabulous enough for it. So he gets to be included.

This is not (to my knowledge) an actual Cagelle, but was a photo titled La Cage Aux Folles which turned up as I was googling. The young man is apparently called Luke Worrall, and isn’t it a great photo?
Doing the stage door the first time Michelle and I dragged
plum177 to see the show, we managed to meet and get photos with several of the Cagelles who were still to a greater or lesser extent in drag. Apparently they had another job on afterwards, but they were happy to chat...

Me withHerman Hannah From Hamburg, my favourite Cagelle. In the show, Hannah is a dominatrix with a whip who strikes up an incredibly cute relationship with the flouncy, fabulous stage manager Francis.

The Hive Mind with two Cagelles: we’re not sure which two. Note the LEGS OMG on the right.

And me with one last Cagelle! Mostly out of costume, as you can see, but I loved his face makeup so I asked for a photo. Nice guy.
This next lot are all from productions of La Cage that I haven’t seen, and they all got mixed up somewhere along the way, sorry.

Aaaand that’s a wrap on Les Fabuleux Cagelles, folks!
So, now for the guy you all came to see – wait, wrong musical. ANYWAY. John Barrowman makes a wonderful, incredibly good-looking Zaza and his voice is, ahem, fantastic... but he’s not Roger Allam. *totally plays favourites* Luckily, he’s also John Barrowman, so I love him anyway.
I am exhausted and can’t quite be bothered to provide commentary on these, so you just get the pretty. I may add some in later, though.

After show party on press night:

And for bonus, some shots of John and his man. Because they are incredibly happy-making, and the original point of this picspam was to cheer someone up. ^_~

And that really is a wrap, folks!
OH MY GOD IT'S DONE.

This is a picspam of *awesome*, bringing memories back of a wonderful night (and answering a question about the final scene too - when Albin is in the white shirt and black trousers - there was a theory that it was written in for John Barrowman - obviously not!
May I link/pimp this along with my (epic!) review?
Thank you for putting this labour of love together!

Date: 2009-11-08 10:22 pm (UTC)And no, very not - the White Shirt Scene was what, er, started my friends and I crushing on Roger Allam. WE'RE NOT NORMAL I KNOW. A few of the jokes got changed for John's show, but nothing actually got written in for him.
Feel free to pimp to your heart's desire! Everyone should love this show, with or without John Barrowman.

By the way, the play is not called The Birdcage in French. "Folles" means "crazy women" and is a derogative and insulting term to call an effeminate man. However, since the film, some parts of the gay community have decided to claim it back. Sorry to bother you with all this, I just thought that as a fan you might like to know all this stuff since I myself am a fact geek when I love something. ^^
PS: the pictures of you with the Cagelles are great! You were very lucky that they came out in costume.

Date: 2010-06-28 08:05 pm (UTC)I'm an absolute LCAF addict, who's feeling withdrawal VERY strongly this week after seeing JB at the National Theatre (he spoke about La Cage quite a bit).
I'd never seen the show before John was in it, and ended up going 7 times during his run. Fell in completely and utterly in love with the whole thing - the story, the music, the Cagelles. I tried hinting to my mum that we should go 'shopping' in New York for a weekend, however she saw through my ruse (and decided that, as I'm 27, I should probably organise it myself!!!)
My favourite Cagelle was Angelique (the moody one) as played by Dane Quixall - we bumped into him at the train station and I went so completely fan-girly. It was quite embarrassing!!! :/ Nice to see him in a few pics.
Anyway, enough waffle from me - thanks so much for posting this, I'm going back for another look through!
PS Points to avi - that's me! With John! Outside the Playhouse! :D
