This time, our focus will be twofold: firstly the Cagelles, the beautiful and multi-talented dancers at the La Cage Aux Folles nightclub, and secondly on John Barrowman’s Zaza. John gets a section all to himself because he’s damn pretty and there are lots of photos of him being damn pretty. Bless you, fandom.

The reason why this play is called ‘The Birdcage’ in French.
Yes, these guys do all have better legs than you. It’s okay, they have better legs than everyone.

One of the things I love about this show is how the stage is simultaneously the real stage, the fictional stage, and various other rooms around the club. Note Hannah from Hamburg on the right with her whip (and her boyfriend), Francis.

A determined attempt to turn La Cage into the Moulin Rouge...
But La Cage is much better. The sheer GLEE everyone in this show has is enough to make me smile.

Me with Jason Pennycooke, who played thebutler maid, Jacob, in the Quast/Allam production! Jacob desperately wants to be a Cagelle, and he’s certainly fabulous enough for it. So he gets to be included.
This is not (to my knowledge) an actual Cagelle, but was a photo titled La Cage Aux Folles which turned up as I was googling. The young man is apparently called Luke Worrall, and isn’t it a great photo?

plum177 to see the show, we managed to meet and get photos with several of the Cagelles who were still to a greater or lesser extent in drag. Apparently they had another job on afterwards, but they were happy to chat...
Me withHerman Hannah From Hamburg, my favourite Cagelle. In the show, Hannah is a dominatrix with a whip who strikes up an incredibly cute relationship with the flouncy, fabulous stage manager Francis.

And me with one last Cagelle! Mostly out of costume, as you can see, but I loved his face makeup so I asked for a photo. Nice guy.

Aaaand that’s a wrap on Les Fabuleux Cagelles, folks!
So, now for the guy you all came to see – wait, wrong musical. ANYWAY. John Barrowman makes a wonderful, incredibly good-looking Zaza and his voice is, ahem, fantastic... but he’s not Roger Allam. *totally plays favourites* Luckily, he’s also John Barrowman, so I love him anyway.
I am exhausted and can’t quite be bothered to provide commentary on these, so you just get the pretty. I may add some in later, though.

This is a picspam of *awesome*, bringing memories back of a wonderful night (and answering a question about the final scene too - when Albin is in the white shirt and black trousers - there was a theory that it was written in for John Barrowman - obviously not!

Date: 2009-11-08 10:22 pm (UTC)And no, very not - the White Shirt Scene was what, er, started my friends and I crushing on Roger Allam. WE'RE NOT NORMAL I KNOW. A few of the jokes got changed for John's show, but nothing actually got written in for him.
Feel free to pimp to your heart's desire! Everyone should love this show, with or without John Barrowman.
